As a responsible corporate citizen,
we actively support BEE. The Event Company takes empowerment seriously,
and is achieving impressive results. Event Communications (Pty)
Ltd is 51% owned by a non-white shareholder and the balance of
49% is held by the Midnight Oil Trust.
Over the past 14 years The Event Company has worked with a large
number of suppliers of services, which has eventually culminated
in the development of a select team of suppliers. It is the company's
policy to give preference to black-owned suppliers who have the
capacity and capability of providing good service. In the last
two years, black-owned suppliers have constituted over 25%.
Future empowerment initiatives are also in place. The Event Company
has established a division to train and place barmen and waiters,
in line with government's emphasis on tourism as a source of economic
growth and job creation. The Event Company has identified that
the lack of basic skills in the hospitality industry is a major
impediment to the growth of the sector, and has set up a school
to offer short-term training programmes to upgrade the skills
of individuals. The Event Company has trained over 380 barmen
and waiters, the majority of whom have been placed, or work as
freelancers, at Vodaworld Events in Midrand.
